New Haven, CT — July 7, 2024 — The Patient Is U [TPIU], a non-profit public 501(c)(3) Public Charity dedicated to improving the relationship between healthcare providers and patients, leading to better quality of care and decreasing healthcare costs, announced today that it has awarded D. Barry Boyd, MD, MS of Greenwich Hospital the TPIU Compassionate Healthcare Award.
This TPIU accolade recognizes those health care providers who deliver compassionate healthcare and is conferred only to a cadre of health care providers who distinguish themselves by delivering exceptional patient care with great compassion. Governor Ned Lamont recently recognized TPIU for its dynamic and enduring commitment to improving Compassionate Healthcare in Connecticut by issuing a proclamation that July 10, 2024 was TPIU Day in Connecticut.
A medical oncologist since 1986, Dr. Boyd practices and is a senior member of the Yale New Haven Health Smilow Cancer Hospital in Greenwich, CT. He’s the founder of the Integrative Medicine Program at Greenwich Hospital, former Director of Nutritional Oncology, Assistant Clinical Professor, developer and former Director of Curriculum in Nutrition and Integrative Medicine at Yale School of Medicine. At the latter, he also teaches Micronutrients and Cancer Prevention in the Genes and Development Section and the Role of Energy Balance on Cancer Risk and Outcome in the Endocrinology Section. “At TPIU we are firm believers and strong advocates that compassionate care engenders three key meaningful results: improves patient outcomes and satisfaction, decreases healthcare costs and reduces workplace burnout,” stated KJ Lee, MD, TPIUFounder.
“Research shows that the better the patient experience, the better the clinical outcome. Patients who are treated with compassion trust their doctors and are more propense to adhere to a physician’s advice and medication protocol. So, we congratulate Dr. Boyd on this momentous achievement,” Lee added.
According to Claudio Pannunzio, TPIU-Senior Vice President of the Board, “Numerous are the physicians who receive positive feedback from patients. However, relatively few earn such high praise about the compassion with which they deliver their care. Humanism, empathy, and compassion are the core traits of Dr. Boyd’s practice and contributions to the medical field.”
“I have been a patient of Dr. Boyd for 5 years, and witnessed firsthand his exceptional, patient-focused care. His approach transcends diagnosis and focuses on the person behind the patient deepening the human experience of healthcare. His dedication and compassion honors TPIU mission to care for anyone with the knowledge to treat and the heart to care,” Pannunzio continued.
Dr. Stephanie Paulmeno, Chairman of the TPIU Board and a public health nurse noted, “We have many good and even great physicians, nurses and other healthcare providers, but even within this esteemed group some stand out. Dr. Barry Boyd of the Yale New Haven Health System/Greenwich Hospital is one of them.”
“For decades his caring and commitment to his patients and their loved ones has been a hallmark of his practice. It can be seen not only in his own actions but in the actions of his staff. Empathy plus action equals compassion, and Dr. Boyd adds compassion into his interactions in so many different ways, thus making him an ideal physician for recognition by The Patient is U Foundation.”
